This week's reading talks about different approaches and theoritical models that public relations people need to apply in different environment and different countries depending on their culture and shared values. Like in Indonesia, PR is scarcely used because they find that PR is more of a western thing and not popular in this country. Companies in Indonesia still use a lot of marketers and advertisement to convince people to buy their products/services. They think that this way of persuading is more effective in Indonesia. You can still find public relation practitioners in Indonesia, but not as many as in Western countries. Majority of the people in Indonesia are Muslims, in Thailand most people are Budhist and in Western countries people embrace Catholics. So, the way PR practice their job is vary according to the shared believes in every region. But not only religion, their etnichity will also effect their job scope.
For example in doing campaigns for government/president election. In the US, Obama use a lot of press conference to increase publicity, but in Indonesia, SBY (the president of Indonesia) uses more of the media and campaign on the streets to reach their audience and attracts public because they believe that people watch the media more and they like personal contact.

Yeah, it's true though that in Indonesia PR seems to not popular in a way other country does.
ReplyDeleteI just have the feeling that they still do not realize how effective PR is.
They stick to the way that advertising is something rather than a PR.
omg, if you see what i posted on my blog, i was complaining about the lack of professional PR people in indonesia. After reading through yours, i think we have the same idea that Indonesia should really start to realize about the important roles of PR you see.!
ReplyDeleteto reply on Bebeki's comments, I think Indonesians are still strongly influenced by the advertisement shown in the media, that's why they dont really care abt PR. But yes rollercoaster, I think we should trigger the development of public relations in Indonesia. lol
ReplyDeleteFrom my point of view, different regions may have different ways of managing relationship between media and its audiences. It is reasonable that Asian public relations' style is different than that of Western which may based on their own economies, political and religions. However, it does not mean that Asian ways of public relations should follow that of the westerns, but to see each others strength and weakness and whether it is suitable for their current situations.
ReplyDeleteIt is very saracastic to talk about China Media, everyone knows it is controlled by the government. Nevertheless, it is much better than that in 1989. The Tian`an men Square incident is still a hidden part. From what I know, there was a journalist writing about it comapring with another issue a year ago when I was in Chengdu. And it was published out on the newspaper, but the other day, I have heard that she has been fired and on the next day`s newspaper, the elite of the newspaper coorperation has apologized for nothing! That is to say, it is not easy for people to work in China as a PR person. They needs a lot of alarms to warn them what is okay to do with and what is not.
